Additional Artists Information:
Kuumba Lynx (KL) is an urban arts organization founded in 1996 on the belief that youth and their communities deserve opportunities to thrive. Each ensemble is unique in their artistic presentations of original “edutaining” work, however they share a core mission of preserving Hip Hop's audacious hope and cultural resistance via an authentic urban voice. They seek to bring a variety of performers together to discover the complexity of their differences, and to state their hope for a multicultural and empowered future.
Members of KLAE and KLPE Apprentices have presented locally, nationally, and internationally in places such as Europe, South Africa, Cuba, Japan, New Orleans, Las Vegas, South Dakota, San Francisco, LA, New York, and Atlanta. Performance venues include Grant Park, Millennium Park, Harris Theatre, Museum of Contemporary Art (Hip Hop Theatre Fest), UIC Pavilion (“Dia De La Nino”), Mexican Fine Arts Museum (African Presence in Mexico exhibit), The House of Blues, Victory Gardens, and Black Ensemble Theatre. KLAE ensemble members have been recognized as 2011 & 2012 Harris Fellows, 2012 Hip Hop Mamas Connect Force/Zulu Nation recipients, gained the Chicago’s Hip-Hop Congress’ Females in Hip-Hop title, and achieved Gwendolyn Brooks Poet Laureate finalist recognition in 2010. They have also won LTAB’s 2011 and 2012 Chuck D Lyrical Terrorist Award, and ranked in the top twenty international poetry teams in the 2010 Brave New Voices international poetry competition. Members have also placed first 1st in 2008 & 2010 Louder than a Bomb poetry festival and the ‘09 NIKE Black History Poetry Slam. Learn more about Kuumba Lynx.
